The state-run broadcaster KBS has denied agreeing that actor Kim Young-dae would step down from the lead role in its upcoming teen series "School 2021," scheduled to air in the latter half of the year.
The broadcaster was countering Kim's claim made in a statement released Thursday, following reports on his withdrawal from the series earlier in the day.
"Actor Kim Young-dae signed a contract to star in the series, and took part in meetings for lead characters and table readings," it said. "While he was preparing to start filming in July, his agency recently told us that he wanted to step down, without prior notice to the production team."
Adding that the broadcaster finds it "regrettable" that the news of his removal was released without any prior discussion with the team, it said: "The production company and KBS have not reached an agreement on Kim's 먹튀사이트 , and we are trying our best to reach an amicable outcome."
Earlier the same day, local news outlet JTBC "exclusively" reported that Kim, who recently rose to stardom after appearing in the hit series "The Penthouse: War in Life," had decided to leave the upcoming series. It added KBS was now going through a list of new actors to replace his role.
The actor's agency Outer Korea confirmed the news, saying Kim was in talks to star in a different TV series, tvN's new series "Shooting Star."

KBS's "School" is a hit franchise that follows the love and school lives of adolescents. Since starting in 1999, it has released seven series through 2017 featuring various top actors such as Bae Doo-na, Jo In-sung, Gong Yoo, Kim Woo-bin and Lee Jong-suk.
Including the as-yet-decided new actor, "School 2021," the eighth in the anthology series, will star Kim Yo-han, Jo Yi-hyun, and Hwang Boreumbyeol as leads. It will follow the four high school classmates' journey to finding their respective identities, friendship and romance.
Kim Young-dae was supposed to play one of the four classmates, Jung Young-joo, a newly transferred student with a past.
This is not the first time "School 2021" has faced issues with a lead actor. The series was originally planned for release last year as "School 2020," starring "Okja" actress Ahn Seo-hyun as one of the leads with singer-actor Kim Yo-han.
However, the production team revealed that it had problems with the father of the 17-year-old actress, claiming that this ultimately led to Ahn being dropped from the series. "We have made a difficult decision that we can no longer work with Ahn as her father's requests have become unbearable," it said in a statement last March.
Ahn's father commented on the statement, saying, "It's hard to believe that my daughter had to step down from this show, and it is shame to see an allegation that is far different from the actual truth."
Actress Kim Sae-ron was reported to be in talks to take her role, following Ahn's withdrawal, but the series was pushed back a year and a different actress was cast.
